Ian Dowdy, LPC

Whenever I am asked what I am passionate about, somewhere on that list is always “helping others.” From my time spent working with folks in substance abuse treatment, I have come to believe that our thoughts and words create our reality. Sometimes a small perspective change can make a world of difference.

I obtained my bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and my master’s degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I made the decision to return to graduate school after spending time working at a sober living facility as a recovery specialist. While in graduate school, I did my internship at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. During this time, I facilitated intensive outpatient groups, as well as conducted individual therapy sessions.

I specialize in behavioral therapy and utilize an eclectic approach, understanding that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and integrate humanistic elements. I am dedicated to finding the best method of therapy that meets the unique needs of my clients. I am passionate about self-care and have a growth mindset.

In my free time, I enjoy working out and eating well, as I see the importance of connection between physical and mental health. I also enjoy a good tabletop or card game with friends or in a competitive setting.
